I Matter
16" x 20"
oil on canvas
2017
“I Matter” presents a striking portrait that centers on quiet strength and presence. The subject—a woman with deep, dark skin and a natural afro puff—is shown in profile, her face gently shadowed to suggest introspection rather than direct engagement. Draped in a vivid gold, off-the-shoulder garment, she emerges with a calm confidence that commands attention without the need for overt expression.
The composition comes alive through dynamic contrasts: the warmth of her garment and skin plays against a backdrop energized by bold red brushstrokes, with touches of blue and white weaving through to create movement and depth. Rather than confining the figure within traditional boundaries, the surrounding expressive brushwork and intentional use of negative space breathe vitality into the canvas. This thoughtful combination of loose, purposeful strokes and vibrant color explores an Afrocentric Neo-Impressionist style that balances realism with an impressionistic energy.
Far from simply a portrait, the work carries a message of affirmation—highlighting visibility, worth, and the inherent value of women. The piece encourages viewers to acknowledge presence and significance without hesitation or permission, affirming that every woman holds a meaningful place in the world.
