Portrait Commission Complete
I recently completed a portrait commission that transformed a black and white photograph from the forties or fifties into a vibrant, living painting. But this piece became so much more than a technical exercise.
This journey took me deep into presence with both the subject and the story behind her. I connected not only with the original photograph, but with the daughter who commissioned me to bring her mother's image to life, capturing her in her early twenties, frozen in time yet now brought forward in color and emotion. Through conversations and genuine connection, I learned her mother's story, and that knowledge informed every brushstroke.
Painting this piece taught me invaluable lessons about presence, about honoring the people we paint, and about the sacred exchange that happens when art becomes a bridge between generations. It was challenging, yes, but deeply rewarding. This is what Drawing in the Presence truly means, showing up fully for your subject and letting that connection guide your work.
